Choosing a Pediatric Dentist Over a Regular Dentist to Improve Kids Health, School Performance, and Social Relationships

Tooth decay remains the most common chronic disease of children aged 6 to 11

JANUARY 18, 2018 – COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO – Although largely preventable, tooth decay remains the most common chronic disease of children aged 6 to 11. It can occur in both baby and permanent teeth and is caused by acids wearing away the tooth’s hard surface layer, called enamel. Studies have shown that poor oral health care in kids can lead to poor performance in school and in social relationships. For that reason, Pediatric Dentists often give advice on how to keep your teeth strong, and the importance of developing healthy eating habit. They typically give advice on other ways to prevent tooth and gum disease from occurring. Pediatric Dentists also place extra importance in preventing tooth decay.

Pediatric dentists are dental specialists who have completed at least two years of training following dental school in order to solely treat children. General dentists can treat children as well, but specialty training allows a pediatric dentist to have a much greater depth of knowledge when it comes to a child’s oral health, similar to the difference between a pediatrician and a family physician. A pediatric dentist is an authority in areas such as growth and development, dental trauma, and treatment of children with special health care needs.

Dr. Michelle Haman at Discovery Kids Dental in Colorado Springs comments, “Your child’s first visit to a dentist practice should be pleasant and helpful. Children are not born being afraid of the dentist, but they often fear the unknown. Pediatric dental offices like ours, often creates a more kid-friendly environment than that of a general dentist’s office, and makes it a practice of using pleasing, simple words when your child comes for their visit. We want your child to feel at home from the moment your family arrives at our office. Dental health is a life-long endeavor, and giving your child a positive foundation by using a pediatric dental office in their early years will help them throughout their life.”
