A Brief Explanation of the CPU Bottleneck Test

Some of the main causes of bottlenecking are due to the CPU, the memory, the network, the disk, and the software usage of a company. As described in the Forbes article “New Frontiers In Software Testing: Exciting Trends To Expect In 2019“, one of the main causes of website downtime is due to the technical term known as bottlenecking. There have been many famous computer server glitches throughout the recent history of the internet. One of the worst examples was the flash crash on the financial markets, where all servers went down, he caused a massive market panic and millions of dollars lost. Another was when Facebook temporarily went down for the day and there was a social media blackout for the company. In both cases, bottlenecking was the root of the issue. 

Microsoft dubs CPU bottlenecking as being when the processor “is so busy that it cannot respond to requests for time”, but in other words, it just means that the computer is not able to and all the overload of people that are trying to access its website. The result is a slow website or one that is unable to load. But CPUs are not always to blame. Many times, the problem is due to inadequate memory on the computer servers which host these websites and data. In simple terms, what this really means is that the computer servers which are hosting the information and websites are running on outdated RAM chips which caused the computer to run too slow. Under normal conditions with a more vibrant RAM card with more gigabytes or terabytes, the servers would run just fine. As no fault to the number of users trying to access the website, the bottlenecking issue in this situation is due to old hardware. 

Alternatively, bottlenecking can sometimes be due to a sheer lack of the number of servers necessary to perform all the data requests that are asked of it. If a company only has two servers that are hosting all the data for a large international websites, such as Apica Systems, then adequate RAM capacity and CPU performance would certainly not be to blame: it would be wise to discover this small network as the root of the problem. Other times it is purely the software itself which is outdated or flawed in its coding, and not the physical hardware components or users themselves. 

Often, however, the problem can be related to a disk overload. Many times, when disks are full and have no more space to store customer data such as new accounts, passwords, and financial data, then there is no more space from which to access data. Over time, the lack of disk defragmentation (or condensing) is typically the single largest source of disk overload. Some companies opt to ignore defragmentation due to the server downtime required to perform such a task, and thus over time it is the one cause of bottlenecking which is the most overlooked.
